If you've gained employment - not having a Maya software license might not be too big a deal. py tools out there and losing access to them does suck. Lets not mince words, default Maya functionality does leave a fair bit to be desired. But the lack of Python support sucks donkey dick. I haven't actually used Maya LT but just from checking out the features - I must say from a modeling to substance standpoint, you don't actually need most of it. TL DR being able to demonstrate skills and adaptability is more important than the specific software, so saving money by stepping away from Maya for home use might be a good idea. Before the Maya job, I spent almost a year at a Blender job and before that I was at a Max job for about 4 years.

During the interview they knew full well I had 0 Maya or ZBrush experience, but due to portfolio and previous work experience - I managed to get in(though I had ex colleagues shilling me from the inside too). Did some tutorials and then more or less figured it out as I went. I'm actually from a Max background, but recently just got a Maya job. And the fundamentals of 3D art don't actually change anyway. It just sorta opens your mind a bit more to learning new stuff and well - jobs don't care what you like. For Archviz projects, we pretty much just delivered a rendered video and that was it.Īnd I honestly think its a good experience to learn a second software package for the sake of doing so. I used to work for a small studio which utilized Blender and we basically did odd jobs from mobile games to architecture visualization. As long as the work ends up in a usable format for the client, why does it matter really? Though this will vary from client to client, industry to industry. Using a non-industry standard software might not be a drawback in a freelance capacity. And Blender has become more formidable as of late.

Not trying to be anti-Maya or pro-Blender, but as a fresh graduate with no income - sometimes you have to consider the free options out there.
I'm going to go a bit off on a tangent here now so I apologize if I'm straying too off topic. I think it really depends on what you are trying to do and what sort of job you might land yourself into.
